Best weekend getaways from Delhi
Working and living in and around Delhi NCR
has its own merits and unlike any other city there are a host of options when
it comes to weekend getaways. Be it hill stations near Delhi, religious sites,
wildlife sanctuaries or adventure destinations, this metropolitan city offers
all! For those who desperately crave to turn the usual weekends into mini
vacations, here are our top five interesting tourist destinations to head to.
Rishikesh
Situated in the foothills of the Himalayas, Rishikesh is a spiritual and adventure hub for many around India. It’s an important pilgrimage site for Hindus and is considered as the ‘Yoga capital of the world’. Rishikesh is not all about spirituality; it's now a popular white-water rafting centre, backpacker hang-out and Himalayan-trekking gateway. A few places to visit are Triveni Ghat, Neelkanth Mahadev Temple, Laxman and Ram Jhula, The Beatles Ashram, Parmarth Ghat, and Neer Garh Waterfall.
Nainital
Blessed with its own scenic lake, Nainital is a hill station surrounded by the peaks of Kumaon Hills and is full of natural hot water springs. Nainital is divided into two parts, Tallital and Mallital, with the lake separating them. Tallital is the southern side of the lake, while Mallital consists of the northern upper reaches. Some popular engagements around Nainital are its lake, trekking, yatching, and horse-riding. St. John In The Wilderness, Tiffin Top, Naina Peak and Naini Lake are must-visits, when in Nainital.
Manali
Surrounded by high peaks in the beautiful green Beas valley, with mountain adventures beckoning from all directions, Manali is a year-round magnet. Backpackers come to hang out in the hippie villages; adventurers come for trekking, climbing, rafting and skiing; Indian families come for the mountain air and a taste of snow on the 3978m Rohtang La pass. Solang Valley, Naggar Castle and Tibetan Monasteries are a must-visit.
Bharatpur
The bird sanctuary of Bharatpur is one of the top tourist places near Delhi. It's home to exotic bird species like the Siberian crane, warblers, kingfishers, hawks and pelicans. The sanctuary is surreal and intensely beautiful at the same time. Bird-watching on a cycle ride is the most recommended way to travel around the sanctuary. Another popular tourist attraction is Lohagarh Fort, surrounded by a moat.
Agra
The magical allure of the Taj Mahal draws tourists to Agra like moths to a wondrous flame. And despite the hype, it’s every bit as good as you’ve heard. But the Taj is not the only attraction. The legacy of the Mughal empire has left a magnificent fort and a liberal sprinkling of fascinating tombs and mausoleums. Other must-experience destinations in Agra are two other UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the sandstone Red Fort and Fatehpur Sikri.
